Live Coding with Strudel | 8 May to 10 May, 2025 | Mool

LIVE CODING WITH STRUDEL

A 3-day workshop facilitated by Abhinay Khoparzi

Date: 8th May to 10th May, 2025

Time: 5 PM to 8 PM

Location: Mool

About the Workshop

Strudel is a fun and creative way to make music using code! In this 3-day workshop, we’ll use a website where we can type special words (code) to create sounds, beats, and music patterns. You don’t need to know anything about coding or music theory—just bring your curiosity and love for music.

We’ll learn how to play with sounds using Strudel, a tool that runs in your internet browser. We’ll type code live, hear what it sounds like, and then change it as the music plays! This is called livecoding—and it’s a bit like being a DJ, but with words instead of turntables.

Each day will have small, easy steps so everyone can follow along and have fun.

Day 1: Getting Started – Making Your First Sounds

Theme: Let’s play with sound!

  • What is livecoding? A fun way to make music by writing and changing code live.
  • Opening Strudel on your browser – no downloads, just a link!
  • Typing simple code to make sounds.
  • Playing with volume, speed, and different types of sound (like drums or melodies).
  • Stacking sounds to make small music loops.
  • Learning fun code tricks: like how to make sounds repeat or play one after another.

By the end of Day 1, you’ll be making your own beats and simple music patterns using just your keyboard.

Day 2: Building Music – Layers, Loops, and Effects

Theme: Let’s make cool patterns!

  • Making different sounds play together like a mini band.
  • Using variables (nicknames for code) to organize your sounds better.
  • Adding effects like echo, delay, or reverb to make your music sound dreamy, bouncy, or weird.
  • Playing with patterns—how to make music that changes over time or surprises you.
  • Introducing simple generative music—using rules to create new sounds without doing everything yourself.

By the end of Day 2, you’ll be creating fun, layered tracks that change and evolve as they play.

Day 3: Perform and Play – Visuals, Tricks, and the Future

Theme: Let’s perform and show off our music!

  • Quick recap of everything we’ve learned.
  • Introduction to Hydra, a fun tool that creates colorful moving visuals that dance with your music.
  • Creating simple visuals to go along with your sound.
  • Performing short pieces in front of the group (optional but encouraged!).
  • Talking about Algoraves—parties where people perform music by coding live!
  • Sharing more ways to explore livecoding after the workshop.

By the end of Day 3, you’ll have created your own music set, complete with visuals, and you’ll know how to keep learning and playing with live-coding on your own.

What you need:

  • A laptop or tablet with internet
  • Headphones so you can hear your music clearly
  • A curious mind!

About the Facilitator

Abhinay Khoparzi, also known as Khoparzi, is a creative technologist, artist, and musician who loves mixing code, music, and visuals to make playful and powerful experiences.

He’s been part of the experimental music scene in India for many years, performing in places like Mumbai, Bangalore, and even international festivals in the UK and Dubai. He is one of the co-founders of Algorave India—a community of artists who perform music and visuals by writing code live in front of an audience (yes, it's as cool as it sounds!).

Khoparzi also teaches in universities and independent workshops, where he helps others discover how coding can be a tool for creative expression. His research includes livecoding, electronic music, and digital art, and he loves sharing this knowledge in a way that's fun and easy to understand.

He’s also worked in film and web tech, and co-founded platforms like 3rd Thought Entertainment and Empatheia Films. You might have seen his work in movies like Kshay or Fairy Folk, where he worked behind the scenes as a cinematographer and technical director.

Through everything he does, Khoparzi believes in making technology feel magical, playful, and human. In this workshop, he’s here to help you discover how music can come to life—one line of code at a time.
